David Warren Richards grew up in Council Bluffs, IA. He received both a Bachelors degree and Doctorate in Dental Science from the University of Iowa, Iowa City and then went on to the University of Connecticut to complete specialty training in Periododontology and a PhD in cellular biology. After graduating he accepted a faculty position at the University of California in San Francisco where he taught clinical dentistry and oversaw research projects to investigate epithelial cell behavior and collagen degradation in inflammatory sites. In 1997, after receiving tenure at UCSF, Dr. Richards decided to further his career and pursue his passion, direct patient care. He now has a successful dental practice in San Diego performing periodontology, including laser periodontal therapy, and dental implantology.
He is very committed to both the dental and patient community and is currently the president of the San Diego County Dental Society (2012), editor for both the California Society of Periodontiology and Pierre Fauchard Academy and an active member of the American and California Dental Associations. He also remains involved in teaching and is part of the Clinical Faculty at South West College Dental Hygiene School in San Diego.
